GRUNDY, Va. — Twin Valley managed to turn a big deficit into a lead.
After shooting poorly the entire second half Grundy managed to find a way, somehow, to win.
Grundy and Twin Valley split the varsity half of a school-night, 4-game marathon in Black Diamond District play Tuesday.
The Lady Wave pulled out a 47-44 victory over its Buchanan County rival. In the boys nightcap it was all Twin Valley after a slow start. The Panthers clobbered Grundy, 66-44.
The Lady Wave got 17 points and 10 rebounds from Lexi Boyd and 11 points from Emily Lane.
Kim Lester (12 points) and Lexy Vance (11) helped lead the Lady Panthers comeback from a 27-17 halftime deficit.
Hannah O'Quinn contributed a double-double. The 6-foot-3 senior scored six of her 10 points and grabbed half of her 12 boards in the third quarter when Twin Valley (9-8) went on a 13-2 run and took its first lead since the first quarter, 37-36 on a driving layin by Vance with exactly five minutes remaining.
The lead changed hands eight times after that. Grundy took the lead for good, 45-44 on two free throws by Lane with 1:18 remaining.
"I think our halfcourt possessions and our wise use of time helped us pull it out," Grundy coach Craig Plymal said. "We did go cold, that's the second time we've done that with them. We were trying to step it up and get some time possessions and that's big for us."
Grundy hit just two of its first 18 shots from the field in the second half and settled for a series of long-range 3-point attempts.
Jessie Caudill a game-tying 3 at the 3:09 mark, one of just five second-half field goals for the Lady Wave.
"Caudill hit a big shot for us," Plymal added. "Twin Valley kind of makes you do that. They come out in a man and then they sag. We were not expecting a man and that was a good change for them.
"We hit some early threes and that's not always good for us. We think we got to shoot them every possession and that's not always the best scenario for us."
