COUNCIL, Va. — Hurley and Council are about as evenly matched as two teams can be and this week proved it.
The Rebels avenged a Monday loss at home to Council with a 51-41 Crooked Road Conference win over the Cobras Friday night at Council Elementary-Middle School.
Zack Lester tossed in 18 points to lead three double-figure scorers for Hurley, which evened the season series at two games apiece. The two Buchanan County squads met twice in CRC play and in two different in-season tournaments.
"It's hard to beat a team every time when you play them that much, but we beat them twice and they beat us twice, so at least we evened it up," said Lester, who handed out six assists and got four steals for the Rebels.
There were seven lead changes and five ties before Hurley rallied in the fourth period to break a 33-33 tie and go in front for good.
All five starters, Lester, Brady Justice, Chris Spencer, Alex Pack and freshman Taylor Justus played key roles in a 10-0 run to start the final quarter and an 8-2 spurt to close it out.
Their play offset a 16-point, 19-rebound performance from David D. Boyd, one of five Council seniors playing their last home game.
Justus scored eight points, Lester scored six and Pack grabbed four of his 13 rebounds and blocked two shots in the fourth quarter.
"In the fourth quarter we started hustling more and stiffened up on defense,” Lester said.
Justice hit two 3s for the only third-quarter scoring for Hurley (6-14) and finished with 14 points. Justus finished with 12 points.
No one else scored in double figures for Council (4-16). The Cobras shot just 29.6 percent (8-of-27) from the field in the second half and were a mere 5-of-14 from the free throw line.
"We had opportunities," Council coach Jeremy Ratliff said. "Hurley did what they needed to do to get the win and we didn't and that's really what it comes down to.
"Free throw killed us. At Hurley we couldn't miss at the line and here we couldn't hit one. We missed a lot of easy layups. We settled for too many outside shots against their 2-3 zone. We shot 19 or 20 threes and we're not a 3-point shooting team."
Consecutive 3-pointers by sophomore Jason Perkins did get the Cobras within 43-39 with 2:42 remaining. Lester hit two free throws to start the 8-2 game-ending Rebel run. Hurley forced 20 turnovers.
