HONAKER, Va. — Honaker completed one goal Thursday night, complete a sweep through its conference.
Next up is to keep its record unblemished and finish the regular season tonight when it hosts Grundy and then start its post-season quest for a state title with its conference tourney next week.
The Tigers improved to 23-0 and finished Crook Road Conference play a perfect 12-0 with a 72-44 thumping of Hurley Thursday night at A.P. Baldwin Gymnasium.
Tanner Robinette had his patented double-double night with 28 points and 17 rebounds, plus seven blocks. Hartley Hilton doubled up as well with 16 and 10. Brett Boyd added 11 points and Blake Stinson handed out 13 assists.
Hurley (6-16) kept it close for about a quarter-and-a-half when the dominance of Robinette inside and a series of bad passes by the Rebels led to a 16-4 run that extended a slim 16-15 lead to 32-19 just before halftime.
"Hurley came out with a lot of fire, a lot of intensity," said Honaker coach Marcus Dunham, whose club clinched the CRC crown last week. "We had to make some adjustments, pick up our intensity level in the second half.
"Our first goal was to get the regular season championship and get the number one seed out of our conference going into the regionals and we got that. Now everyone else can fight for second."
A 12-0 run gave Honaker a 47-24 lead as the Tigers held Hurley scoreless the first 6:14 of the third period.
The Rebels turned the ball over six times in a 3-minute span in the second quarter and 20 times overall.
"Turnovers," Hurley coach Bart Chambers said. "We just turned the ball over too much and let the game get away from us."
Brady Justice was the lone double figure scorer for the Rebels with 20 points.
