WELCH — Six Mount View Golden Knights scored in twin digits Wednesday evening to lead the host McDowell Countians to an 87-53 victory over the Summers County Bobcats.
The victory avenged a one point overtime loss by the Knights at Hinton just 11 days ago.
Mount View junior Ellis Bryson scored from inside to open the contest, staking the Knights to a lead they would never surrender.
Sophomore De'Moni Edwards bombed a three from the right wing before Bobcat senior Matt Ryan knocked down one of two free throws to get the visitors on the scoreboard at the Castle before Bryson added another deuce from down low for a 7-1 Mount View lead.
Seven first quarter Summers turnovers, combined with better than 50 percent Knight shooting, translated into a 24-7 advantage for the View after the inaugural frame.
Edwards penned 8 of those 24 points in the opening chapter, while junior Jaquane Imes tossed in 5.
The two Class AA schools played on more-or-less even terms in the second, as Mount View extended its advantage to 46-28 at intermission.
The Knights outgunned Summers by three in the third before blowing the contest wide-open in the final eight minutes by a 24-11 count.
Edwards took high point honors for the Golden Knights with 14, followed by juniors Joseph Hayes and Imes, who added 13 each, while senior Marquis Bonds tossed in 12, and senior Kobe Brown netted 11, as did Bryson.
Hayes, Bonds and Kobe Brown came off the bench to reach double figures, as the Golden Knight reserves outscored the Summers County subs 41-6.
Ryan's 21 points took game scoring honors.
“I thought (the Knights) really played well,” said Bobcats head coach Robert Bowling. “They got off to a good start. Shot the ball well.
“Anytime they shoot the ball that well, with their athleticism, they're going to be hard for anybody to handle.”
Mount View head coach Gary Brown spoke of his charges attempting to make a late-season move to get a higher seed for the five team sectional week after next.
“We're hoping to make a little push to get a better seed…I just feel like if we can win two more regional pairing games, we may have a shot at third place,” he said.
Looking at the Bobcats, who played Independence last night, Brown continued, “We figured they might be a little tired. Plus, the last time we played them, we gave up a lot of easy buckets.
“We were in a diamond press and they were throwing it (ball) over the top and getting easy baskets. Tonight, we made them work for everything they got against our press.”
“I thought we played fairly well as a team,” Brown said. “We shot the ball fairly well.
“We didn't turn it over that much, and if we do that, we've got a chance to win.”
The Bobcats (8-11) will visit Pocahontas County Friday while Mount View (6-11) will entertain Independence Thursday.
