BRISTOL, Va. — "Big floor, speed kills," said Grundy coach Craig Plymal.
That kind of summed up the day for the Lady Wave, who fell to host Virginia High in the Southern Empire Conference semifinals Thursday afternoon at the Bearcat Den.
Grundy (15-10) had trouble generating any kind of offense, starting with a 4-point opening quarter and trailed the SEC regular season champs from start to finish.
"We couldn't get into a half-court set of any kind," Plymal said. "We played a good defensive game, we held them to 20 there in the first half.
"I thought we were gonna get something going there in the third quarter, then we couldn't defend the three. A big floor doesn't play in our favor, at any time."
Seniors Emily Lane (11 points) and Autumn Sperry (9) played their final games for the Lady Wave. Lexi Boyd contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Three starters scored in double figures for the Bearcats, led by post Savannah Jacobs with 14 points. Kristin Wilson hit three 3-pointers and she and Taylor Owens each added 10 points.
Point guard Amaya Lee hit a pair of 3s and added nine points, five assists and five steals.
Virginia High took a modest 20-12 halftime lead and scored the first six points of the second half. The Lady Wave got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
"They like to press, but they've very patient and hard to defend in the halfcourt set. They hit some big shots that we just didn't defend," added Plymal.
"We didn't hit some big shots, but we had a good year. I'm proud of our seniors, Emily Lane and Autumn Sperry. They worked really hard this year and did some great things for us."
Grundy shot just 25 percent (12-of-48) from the field and was 10-of-19 from the free throw line.
