WELCH — The Independence Patriots scored six of the final eight points of Thursday evening’s basketball game at the Castle to take a 45-41 win over the host Mount View Golden Knights.
The nip-and-tuck affair, that featured six ties and ten lead changes, was deadlocked at 39 with 3:37 remaining in regulation, thanks to a foul shot by the Knights’ Kenneth Brown to pull even with the Patriots.
Indy senior Aaron Hunt eased the visitors back into the lead for keeps 12 seconds later with a pair of charity tosses before the guests ran more than a minute off the clock after stopping the Knights’ shot try that would have produced another tie.
Junior Tyler Haga, who scored 14 points in the game to lead the Pats, scored on a driving goal at the 1:48 mark.
Mount View junior Ellis Bryson recorded a putback with 1:01 showing to score his first two points of the game and pull his team to within two, at 43-41.
Independence missed the front end of a one-and-one with 25 ticks left, but scrapped for the rebound and received possession on a held ball.
Haga sealed the victory five seconds later, knocking down both ends of the bonus for the win.
Related Patriot head coach Chad Perkins, “We’ve lost a lot of close games and Mount View has too. We did just enough things right to come out of here with the win.”
Haga and fellow junior Markus Guy hauled down 9 rebounds apiece, as the Patriots outrebounded their hosts 38-33.
Guy and Hunt followed Haga’s 14 points with 7 apiece.
Junior Sidney George led the Knights in scoring with 9, followed by 6 each by Kobe Brown and De’Moni Edwards. Bryson paced the View on the boards with 8 rebounds.
“It looked like we had no energy. I don’t know if it was last night’s game, but we just looked like we came out flat. We didn’t move. We just wanted to stand around,” assessed Golden Knight head coach Gary Brown.
The Pats, now 8-10, will play at Shady Spring Friday evening, while the 6-12 Knights will entertain Liberty Raleigh Saturday evening.
