HONAKER, Va. — After winning their first 26 games, Honaker was still in a win or go home situation. The Tigers had high hopes for a big game and they got it. Powered by a senior, a freshman and an outstanding supporting cast, Honaker advanced to the “elite eight” with a 75-55 defeat of Fort Chiswell at A. P. Baldwin Gymnasium.
Mister Consistency, 6-foot-8 senior post Tanner Robinette supplied a triple-double and freshman sharpshooter added the dagger as the Tigers remained perfect. Robinette totaled 27 points, 17 rebounds and 14 blocked shots. Boyd a freshman added 19 points, including five 3-pointers.
Fort Chiswell had a solid start. They packed their defense inside to keep the ball away from Robinette and created five Honaker turnovers in the early going. Bryson Booher dropped in a 3 and the Pioneers were up 10-6 with 3:15 to play in the first.
“We’re not ready for this season to be over yet,” Robinette said. “We have one goal in mind and we don’t want to fall short of it.”
The Tigers held Fort Chiswell scoreless the rest of the quarter. Led by Blake Stinson and Hartley Hilton, Honaker went on a 15-0 run to get a sizeable lead going up by as many as 13 points. But the Pioneers very methodically battled back. They cut the lead to single digits, Honaker had a 32-24 advantage at halftime.
After not scoring a point in the first half, Boyd canned four 3s early in the third quarter to dagger the Pioneers.
“I couldn’t hit anything in the first half,” Boyd said. “My coaches had confidence in me, they told me to keep shooting and I started knocking them down. I definitely got a lot more confidence after the first one went in.”
When Boyd started hitting on the perimeter it opened up the inside for Robinette who took advantage by attacking the basket. Robinette had 17 of his points in the second half.
“When Brett started hitting those 3s, it opened up the floor tremendously,” Robinette said. “Early in the game they were packing everything down low, but the rest of the team really came through.”
Hilton added 14 points and Stinson 11 points for Honaker. Stinson also distributed seven assists and Brent Coleman contributed six assists.
Booher the senior point guard finished with 14 points to pace Fort Chiswell.
Honaker will face Eastside at the Bearcat Den in the 1A West semifinals on Friday.
“Eastside has a good team, Coach (Patrick) Damron always does a good job with his clubs,” Honaker coach Marcus Dunham said. “At this point everyone we play will be good. We will have to be ready to play.”
