BLAND, Va. — For nearly eight minutes, the game between Narrows and Bland County was close. All it took was a three by Chase Hankins at the buzzer of the first quarter to get the Bears off and running.
Bland County outscored the Green Wave 28-5 in the second as the overpowered Narrows 73-47 on Friday night at Bland High School.
“We’ve had a couple weeks where we were taken to the woodshed by Fort Chiswell and Galax,” Bland County head coach Rich Hankins said. “We really needed to come out strong and get a little momentum back. We shot the basketball exceptionally well in the first half which carried right over to our defense. We just played well.”
The Bears only trailed once when Chandler Burton hit a three and Joe Hall followed with a jumper to make it 5-4. Bland County’s Asher Dillow answered with two of three from the line then Darryl Clark hit from deep as the Bears quickly turned the one-point deficit into a 9-5 advantage.
Narrows trailed 16-11 after the first and had several opportunities to get close in the second. Danny Stevens could only connect on one of two from the line and Kelly Dent missed a one-and-one opportunity as the Wave could only cut the margin to 18-12. That would be as close as Narrows would get for the rest of the game.
The Bears responded with a 12-2 run to make it 30-14 midway through the second.
“Disappointed with our first-half play,” Narrows head coach Chris Gautier said. “I thought we came out flat. We really didn’t defend the way we intended to. We gave up some easy buckets and turned the ball over too much.
“We made some adjustments at halftime and turned some things around. At the end of the day, pretty positive about the things we saw in the second half for the most part.”
A Burton three temporarily disrupted Bland County’s run, but they closed the half on a 14-1 run.
“I think we put a little defensive intensity on them out front and turned them over,” coach Hankins said.
“We got out in transition and got some high percentage baskets early. Really opened it up that way.”
The Wave would not give up, but they couldn’t cut into the Bears’ advantage.
Bland County’s lead grew to 31 points early in the fourth before the teams went to their benches for most of the final period.
“They have some of the best guards in this area,” Gautier said. “It’s a matchup problem for most teams. They shot the ball exceptionally well tonight and we just didn’t have an answer for that.
“You have to give them credit. They can shoot the ball well.”
Burton lead Narrows with 20 points, but he was the only Wave player in double figures. Rodney Purdue was the next highest at eight points.
Dillow finished with a game-high 32 points for Bland County while Clark added 23.
Hankins chipped in with nine points.
“They were very tough,” coach Hankins said of Dillow and Clark. “Probably the biggest thing was they really shared the basketball with each other and every body else. It gave our team a whole lot of confidence which we’ve been lacking.”
