SHADY SPRING — The Bluefield Beavers defended yet another top ranking in the state Associated Press poll on Monday night, starting a big week on the road with a 103-81 win at regional foe Shady Spring.
Five players scored 14 or more points for Bluefield (14-0). Anthony Eades led the way with 27 points, nailing four of the Beavers’ six three-point tries. Point guard Lykel Collier dished out 19 assists.
“It was a good team effort,” said Bluefield head coach Buster Large. “We were just glad to get this one up here because it’s a tough place to play, anytime.”
Chase Connor dropped in 32 points for the Tigers, who had four players in double-figure scoring. Connor connected on six of Shady Spring’s nine treys.
“He’s a great athlete,” Large said. “Anybody who can score 30 points a game is a pretty good basketball player.”
The Beavers held a 27-24 lead after a busy first quarter but outscored the Tigers 30 to 16 in the second period.
Large said, “We were able to get loose and [we] were able to get our defense to slow them down a little in the second quarter.”
Bluefield maintained its 17-point halftime lead at the end of three quarters.
The Beavers made 15 of 18 free throws and Shady Spring was 12 for 15 at the line.
Bluefield plays Wednesday at Summers County, and at Princeton on Friday night.
