HURRICANE — Freshman Trey Dawson drilled a three with 30 seconds left to give Hurricane a lead that it expanded upon at the foul line, beating Princeton 66-61 on Saturday night.
The Tigers got off to a quick start with three early three-pointers, including two by Darnell Palmer, and Princeton led 14-4, three minutes in. Hurricane rallied, and a Palmer three at the end of the quarter gave Princeton a 19-14 lead after one period.
Dawson entered the game in the second quarter and promptly hit a trey, tying the game at 19. The lead see-sawed back and forth and Princeton led 28-27 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Tigers stretched the lead to eight at 41-33 before Hurricane rallied. A three-point play by Kyle Caron helped Princeton to hold a five-point advantage, 48-43, entering the final period of play.
Princeton led 61-57 on a pair of Ryan Meadows foul shots with 1:20 remaining. Redskins guard Rasaan Harris converted a three-point play and after a Tiger turnover, Dawson’s three was the dagger to Princeton’s heart.
The freshman provided 18 points off the bench to help his club to the win.
Princeton, now 9-6, returns home to host Capital Wednesday night.
