WELCH — A song title from the back in the day was “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot!”
Mount View was certainly hot for the better part of the first half Friday night at the Castle against River View Raiders. The Golden Knights broke a 4-4 tie early in the first quarter with 14-unanswered points and didn’t look back in a 51-40 win over the Raiders.
Junior Maurice Brown scored nine first chapter points as Mount View led 9-4 going into the second. Four consecutive Raider turnovers helped Mount View freak the 4-all tie.
Brown scored down low after a take away, added a foul shot moments later and finished the opening quarter scoring again from inside.
Nine straights points to start the second quarter led the Golden Knights to the 18-4 advantage with 5:35 remaining in the half.
Brown scored on his own offensive rebound, Teddy Hazzard bombed two and then a trey from the left side and Antoine Callaway had a putback, while the Raiders were going 8:26 without scoring.
A Bryan Church deuce from the left front cut deficit to nine, at 21-12, with 2:13 showing, but a nine-point Golden Knight string extended the lead to 30-12 at intermission.
Brown scored on a Hazzard assist before Hazzard another a trifecta, this one from the right side to start that nine-point run. Jerry Saunders closed out the half with a pair free throws and a driving goal.
In the third, senior LeShon Benton had seven points and a like number of rebounds, as a man-to-man River View defense held the Knights to a lone field goal over that eight-minute stretch.
Twice in the final chapter, the Raiders got to within 10, at 45-35 and 48-38, but could get no closer.
Brown finished with 20 points to take game scoring honors, while Hazzard knocked down 14.
Church and Benton accounted for 17 and 15 points respectively for River View, while Benton hauled 13 rebounds.
Of his team’s defense against Brown in the second half, Raider head coach Don Smith said, “We extended further up the court and they weren’t able to get the ball to him... I thought defensively we played well in the second half.”
Related Golden Knight head coach Gary Brown, “I thought we started the game well. The guys were playing together. They were moving the ball well. We were getting the ball into Maurice.”
“All-in-all, it was pretty good win for us,” concluded Brown.
Mount View, now 6-14, will visit Independence Tuesday before entertaining Man Wednesday in their regular season finale.
River View stands at 0-20 and will travel to Westside on Tuesday evening.
