PRINCETON — It took a solid game for the James Monroe Lady Mavericks to get past the first round of the Class AA, Region 3, Section 2 playoffs, and that’s exactly the way it worked out in a bruising 41-27 defeat of Mount View’s Lady Knights on Saturday evening.
“I’m very pleased,” said James Monroe first-year head coach Malory McPherson. “All of the things we emphasized in practice this week — being patient on offense, running through our plays, rotating in our zone defense, they executed all of those things. I’m very pleased with them.”
McPherson said, “We’ve had all week to practice, to prepare for this one game. And all week long, we emphasized rebounding, because that’s what hurt us so bad when we played in Welch last time [a 48-43 loss on Feb. 4].”
“The girls knew going in that they had to box out, and they had to get after it, in order to have the outcome that we did.”
Mount View actually held a 30 to 25 rebounding advantage, with Jordan Younger pulling down 13 boards. But when it counted most, the Mavericks cleared the glass and sent the ball down the floor.
The Lady Knights missed their first 13 field-goal attempts and James Monroe took a 7-0 lead, which grew to 21-12 at halftime. By the final horn, Mount View had turned the ball over 16 times and shot 12 of 52 from the field.
James Monroe committed 13 turnovers.
McPherson said, “We would have liked to have a little higher lead at the end tonight, but a win’s a win. When you play a fast-paced game, you’re going to have some turnovers. Hopefully they’ll eliminate those with a little bit more experience going through this tournament.”
Mount View head coach Yvonne Brown said, “Overall, it was a good effort. ... Their offense was on, and ours wasn’t. ... We just fell a little short tonight.”
Jordan Page topped the Mavs’ scoring with 15 points, going 9 for 11 at the foul line, and Melissa Johnston tossed in 11 points and cleared eight boards.
McPherson said about Page, “We’ve told her over and over again, you’ve got to shoot the ball, and you’ve got to draw that contact. She did that tonight, and she finished just like we expected her to.”
Jordan Younger was a force in the paint for Mount View all year. She said about James Monroe, “They are a great group of girls to play against. I’m proud of them — and us. We all played as hard as we could, and they just beat us.”
Brown said, “I was proud of the successful season we did have, and I’m looking forward to next year.”
James Monroe is looking forward to yet another game with PikeView. Interviewed before PikeView’s defeat of Bluefield, McPherson said, “We’re excited to get past the first round; that’s something we didn’t accomplish last year. We’re looking forward to playing PikeView or Bluefield. They’re both teams we’ve seen throughout the season.”
“We lost two times [to PikeView], but you know the old saying, it’s hard to beat a team three times. So we’re excited about the opportunity ... .”
