Mavericks rally to consolation victory
James Monroe (61) Vs. Giles (56)
Dec 15, 2012
James Monroe 61, Giles 56
NARROWS, Va. — It started to look like a repeat from the night before, but the Mavericks outscored the Spartans 25-12 in the final period to win the consolation game over Giles.
Chord Settle led James Monroe (2-2) with 19 points, five assists and five rebounds, while all-tourney team selection Garrett Mann added 16 points and five blocked shots. Josh Ganoe contributed 10 points and 10 boards.
James Monroe head coach Jonathan McPherson was pleased his Mavericks were able to recover from a 52-49 loss to Narrows in the semifinals.
“I felt it was definitely important,” McPherson said. “I know we played pretty poor last night and had a lot of turnovers. Starting out in this game we had quite a few turnovers too and I thought it was going to be repeat from last night.
“We settled down in the second half and luckily we came back for the win.”
Giles (2-5), which was led by John Shelor with 15 points and 10 by all-tourney performer Kyle Chafin, led 29-19 at the break and 44-36 after three, but the Mavericks fought back to secure the win against a familiar foe.
James Monroe will visit Giles on Monday, the third meeting between the schools in six days. The Spartans have lost four in a row.
