BLUEFIELD, Va. — Tony Hood was the coolest G-Man on the court.
Hood scored 26 points, including 21 in the first half, leading Graham to a 74-37 non-district rout of Richlands on Friday night at Graham Middle School.
Graham (3-1), which completed a 3-0 week with wins over Tazewell, Giles and Richlands, canned eight 3s, including five by Hood, and one apiece from Colby Hill, Spencer Sheets and freshman Roman Workman.
“We had a good night shooting the ball,” Graham head coach Glynn Carlock Jr. said. “We took what they gave us. I think they gave us some shots from the perimeter.
“We have shot the ball pretty well all week. I am proud of them, it was a nice night.”
Hood started with eight points, six on a pair of 3s in the first quarter, as Graham built a 25-9 lead. He added three more 3s and 13 points in the next period, leading the G-Men to a 44-18 lead at the break.
“I was just feeling it. Once I make the first shot, I can make them again and again,” Hood said. “If we can come out there with that performance every night, we will do good.”
Richlands (0-1), which was playing its first game of the season, traded leads with the G-Men three times early on and led 7-6, but the G-Men outscored the Blue Tornado 19-2 to end the quarter.
Hood was 5-of-7 from 3-point range, taking his time and putting the ball through the net. He also had nine rebounds, six assists, five steals and even blocked a shot.
“I just take my time. I can’t really rush anything,” Hood said. “If I ruah it I will miss it so I just have to take my time and make sure I follow through and do how I was taught to shoot.”
It wasn’t just Hood. Colby Hill finished with 22 points, including 11 in the third quarter and 15 after the break. He also had his first dunk of his career.
“Tony is shooting real well for us right now. I am proud of his effort,” Carlock said. “Colby started a little slow tonight, but he got back in the groove. It was a nice night,”
Workman added 10 points for the G-Men, while Zach Profitt and Spencer Sheets tallied six points apiece. Proffitt tied Hood with nine rebounds for Graham.
“I think Roman did some positive things for us, it was a total team effort,” Carlock said. “Zach Proffitt and Marshall Hawley on the inside, and we got a lot of help from our reserves and we learned we can have some help from our guys off the bench tonight.
Richlands was led by Ben Brown with nine points, while A.J. Johnson and Mark Sayhouni added eight points each. The Blue Tornado did lose Todd McGlothlin for the season with knee problems earlier in the week.
“They are a real good club, they have got shooters all the floor and it is really hard to do much other than manning them up because they have shooters everywhere,” Richlands head coach Jody Fuller said. “They make it tough. I had seen them play once before and I knew we just came into a hot seat here.”
Despite having a 26-point lead at the break, Carlock pushed the G-Men to keep pushing, and they did, outscoring the Blues 16-4 in the third quarter and 30-19 in the second half.
“We had an 18-point lead at Tazewell on Monday night and we went out in the second half and we just kind of let the foot off the pedal,” Carlock said. “I didn’t want to see that happen again tonight so we challenged them to rise up and do a little better and they did.
“A 3-0 week for us, and we have another three game week next week..Mass improvement, from the beginning of the week to the end of the week we are getting better.and that is what we look for.”
Richlands will make its home debut on Tuesday against the G-Men, and Fuller is hoping for a better showing in their second game of the season.
“I will have to go watch the film. The intensity early was pretty good but we just weren’t ready tonight to play at this level, not at this point of the season,” Fuller said. “We were not ready for it. We have got a lot of work to do.”
Three games await Graham next week, all on the road at Richlands, Giles and Bluefield. Hood certainly enjoyed playing in front of the home crowd on Friday.
“We had home field advantage, we had a lot of people here to come and support us,” Hood said. “It was just a nice environment that we got to play in to get us ready.”
