WELCH — In a basketball game that resembled a soccer match, with almost uncountable possession changes that led to direction changes, the Mount View Golden Knights outraced River View 86-41 last night at the Castle in the season opener for both McDowell County boys' basketball teams.
Both teams evidenced the early season meeting, with 60 turnovers between the pair. The Raiders gave the basketball away 33 times, while Mount View committed 27 turnovers.
The inability to handle the ball was not a surprise to River View veteran head coach Don Smith. “We have several young players in our lineup, including a pair of freshmen. After they get used to each other, in a month or so, we should do pretty well."
On the other hand, Golden Knight mentor Gary Brown was concerned about his team's carelessness with the basketball, "That's one of the things we concentrated on for this game, taking care of the basketball. And they (Raiders) didn't press us."
Four Knights scored in double figures, led by senior Maurice Brown's 22 points and 10 rebounds. Fellow senior Antoine Calloway added 15 markers and 10 rebounds. Junior Paco Bonds tallied 13 points and senior Jerry Saunders tossed in 10.
Junior Taylor DeHaven paced River View with 15 points and sophomore Cameron Roberts added 20.
River View took an early 2-0 when Dakota Collins hit a layup 1:01 into the first quarter. Calloway's jumper from the baseline tied the count at two before DeHaven connected for three from the front and then added a stickback, with one Brown free throw in between.
Calloway put back a missed free throw to start a 5-0 Knight run that gave the hosts their first lead of the evening when Brown scored following a River View turnover.
Hunter Mahone's foul shot produced the second, and final tie at 8, before Roberts also tossed in a charity shot for the final Raider advantage of the evening.
The full court Mount View press paid huge dividends, forcing turnovers that translated into points, as the Knights scored 16 unanswered markers that spanned the initial two quarters.
Calloway's 10 foot jumper see-sawed Mount View into the lead for keeps at 10-9 with 1:15 showing in the inaugural chapter. Brown accounted for eight of the next 14 points, as the Golden Knights took control.
DeHaven and freshman Tyree Baker scored back-to-back goals to close out the half, cutting the Mount View lead to 38-24 at the break.
Brown and Calloway scored seven points apiece in the third, as the Golden Knights outdistanced their guests 27-6 for a 65-30 advantage after three.
Mount View outscored River View 21-11 in the final eight minutes for the victory.
The Knights will be off until hosting Man on Dec. 18, while River View will return home to entertain the Hillbillies on Dec. 11.
Mount View outrebounded the Raiders 50-26, while outshooting them from the floor 54 percent to 30 percent.
