PRINCETON — Wes Jones converted a three-point play midway through the third period Saturday to give James Monroe a lead it never surrendered, and the Mavericks beat PikeView 69-60 in the consolation game of the Princeton Senior High Christmas Tournament sponsored by Alpha Natural Resources.
PikeView (1-3) started fast, but despite Will Webster’s 11 first-quarter points, they trailed by one at the end of the period.
The Mavericks (5-2), who trailed 34-32 at the break, battled back in the third quarter with a late spurt triggered by two Zach Hatfield baskets and a drive by Mark Dixon.
In a foul-filled fourth quarter, James Monroe survived a PikeView run by hitting its foul shots down the stretch.
Webster finished with 24 points to lead all scorers and David Keen chipped in 12 for PikeView.
James Monroe placed four in double figure scoring — Hatfield with 20, Wesley Jones with 19, and Dixon and Chastin Wickline each with 12.
The Mavericks play at Indepen-dence on Tuesday. The Panthers will compete in a tournament at Chapmanville on Tuesday and Wednesday.
