Lady Raiders over Lady Golden Knights by 2 Points
Mount View (32) Vs. River View (34)
Jan 22, 2013
BRADSHAW — On a cold, cold January night in McDowell County, the River View Lady Raiders stunned the visiting Mount View Lady Golden Knights last night by a 34-32 count.
Analyzed Lady Raider head coach Gehrig Justice, "Phyllis (Sissy) Waldron took the game on herself to make a difference. This was her biggest game this year."
The senior forward scored 16 points to lead River View, including four in the final six minutes.
Waldron and sophomore Kiersten Dority were the only two Lady Raiders to score in the final chapter, as Dority canned all five of her points over the last eight minutes, including a free throw with 14.8 seconds remaining to make the two point difference, rather than the one prior to her trip to the charity stripe.
Continued Coach Justice, "It was a good team effort. It wasn't just one person. Dority made some plays."
Mount View looked to have its way early, as senior Jordan Younger scored six of the eight Lady Knight first quarter points from inside, staking her team to an 8-4 lead with 2:46 left in the canto.
Waldron scored on a drive 16 ticks later and senior Chelsey Dobbs, who was hobbled by a knee injury, connected from the right baseline for an 8-all tie after one.
Dobbs tallied her second, and last, bucket to open the second, completing a 6 point run and producing the first, and what would turn out to be the only, lead change of the game.
Younger helped her club battle back to tie the contest at 15 at the 1:05 mark before senior River View guard Brittany Coeburn hit a jumper from 14 feet and added one of two free throws for an 18-15 Lady Raider advantage at the break.
Waldron, who matched Younger with six first chapter points, opened the third with two freebies and then a coast-to-coast score, giving her team its biggest lead of the evening at 22-16.
Younger, who took game scoring honors with 19 for the Lady Knights, followed a Keisha Johnson driving deuce with two charity tosses and a putback to produce the third tie at 22 with 1:10 left in the third.
Ellamae Johnson and Keisha Johnson traded goals for a 24-24 deadlock before Dobbs' free throw with four ticks left in the third again gave her team the lead, 25-24.
The fourth started as the Dority-Younger show, as the former scored four of her team's first six points of the stanza, while Younger accounted for five of the initial seven Mount View points, as the score was tied for the fifth and final time at 31, with 2:13 showing on the clock.
Waldron was bringing the ball up the court 13 seconds later when she was fouled and answered with one-of-two foul shots.
She again made a freebie 1:01 later for a 33-31 advantage, but Younger cut that deficit in half with a charity toss of her own, with 50.6 seconds showing.
Dority's freebie at the 14.8 mark sealed the win, the second for the much improved Lady Raiders, against 11 losses.
Analyzed Lady Golden Knight head coach Yvonne Brown, "We were just outplayed by River View from start to finish. They just wanted to win more than we did."
The ability of the Lady Raiders to keep Mount View from scoring following offensive rebounds made a difference in the outcome, as did the foul line. Last Tuesday, the Lady Knights made 12-of-13 of their free throws, including 12 straight, while last evening, they could muster only 8-of-22 and 2-of-8 in the final eight minutes.
Ashleigh Belfiore and Keisha Johnson followed Younger's 19 points with four each, while Dobbs and Dority finished with five apiece for the Lady
