PILGRIM'S KNOB, Va. — Hunter Sutherland hit five three-pointers in the first half to help Haysi take command early in Saturday’s BDD nightcap.
The freshman sharpshooter hit his first three tries from the perimeter and scored 18 of his 22 points in the first half, when the Tigers (13-4, 6-0) took a 44-28 lead by the intermission.
Peyton O’Quinn added 15 points and six assists, while Tyler Tipton hit three of Haysi’s 11 three-pointers and scored 14 points.
That helped offset an outstanding effort by Twin Valley’s Logan Cantrell. The senior forward, who has 58 points in his last two games, scored a game-high 31 points on 14-of-18 shooting from the field. Shannon Adams added 11 points for then Panthers (6-9, 1-5).
A free throw by Sutherland extended the Tigers lead to 50-30 early in the third quarter. The final margin was the biggest.
