BIRCHLEAF, Va. — It was Haysi’s biggest regular season victory in BDD play in a few years, and a big call at the end gave the Lady Tigers a chance to win it in regulation play.
Sydney Counts’ free throw with no time on the clock lifted Haysi over
Twin Valley, 47-46, in a key Black Diamond District contest Saturday afternoon at Sandlick Elementary School that was postponed a day by inclement weather.
Counts hit the front end of a one-and-one to cap a 12-2 game-ending run for the Lady Tigers, who trailed 44-35 after two free throws by the Lady Panthers’ Katelyn Jackson with 5:55 remaining.
Counts, Montana Robinette, Maggie Edwards and Hannah Mondrage all notched steals in the fourth period for Haysi, which held Twin Valley (7-6, 5-1) without a field goal in the final 7:27.
Erin Hyden’s baseline drive and two tied the score at 46-46 with 1:12 remaining. Both teams turned the ball over — the Lady Panthers twice — in the final minute.
The officials conferred over the final call for a couple of minutes and explained their call to both coaches. Counts had to wait nearly five minutes in all before the sophomore calmly sank the game-winning free throw.
“We were fortunate,” Haysi coach Ronnie Compton said. “(Twin Valley) got a little rattled with a couple of passes and gave us an opportunity to get close. It would have been easy for us to give up when we were down in the fourth quarter.”
Mondrage finished with 15 points and Robinette with 10 points for Haysi (9-7, 4-2).
Katelyn Jackson scored a game-high 16 points to lead Twin Valley, which missed a shot just before the last foul was called during a scramble for the rebound.
“You don’t usually get that call at the end of a game,” Compton admitted. “I was glad to get it. Normally they just let it go to overtime. I was just tickled with the fact that we didn’t give up and were able to come back.”
Twin Valley tried to take time off the clock in the final five minutes-plus and was holding the ball for the last shot at the end.
“I’m not gonna say what I think (about the last call),” Twin Valley coach Rick Goodman said. “Katelyn was going up to shoot, we thought we were going to the line. But we shouldn’t have been in that situation in the first place.”
Synthia Sutherland hauled in 11 rebounds for Haysi, which held a 35-20 edge on the boards.
