WELCH — Mount View led from start to finish last evening, taking a 62-56 victory over the visiting PikeView Panthers at the Castle.
Analyzed Golden Knight head coach Gary Brown, "It was a good win, but we didn't play well...We turned the ball over quite a few times - unforced."
Despite Coach Brown's concern over the Mount View offense, PikeView Head Coach Lindsey Jones gave credit to the Knight defense for a major portion of the Panther offensive woes, "When they disrupted us, we didn't know what to do."
Senior Ishmyle Sawyers led the Golden Knight offensive attack with 21 points, followed by Maurice Brown's 14 and 13 from Antoine Calloway, both of whom are also twelfth graders.
Jason Weitzel, Tanner Farley and Zach Meadows tallied 13 points apiece for the 5-11 Panthers.
C alloway opened the game with a driving goal 16 seconds into the fray, followed by a Brown bucket from close range.
Poor shooting early by the Panthers helped Mount View take an 11-3 advantage on a Jerry Saunders trey with 5:08 showing in the opening quarter.
PikeView rallied with a three-point play, as the Panthers closed to within five, at 16-11, at the chapter's end.
Nine unanswered points to open the second period helped Mount View to its biggest lead of the night at 25-11, with 5:28 showing before the break. Saunders started the run with back-to-back goals, followed by Calloway's two free throws and a trifecta by Sawyers.
Weitzel and Meadows scored four each the remainder of the second, cutting the deficit to 31-20 at intermission.
The Mount View lead fluctuated between five and a dozen points in the third, with PikeView cutting four points from that halftime lead by the Knights, before the hosts pulled out the 62-56 decision. Seven times in the final eight minutes the Panthers closed the gap to six before the final time at the buzzer.
The Golden Knights controlled the boards 39-31, led by eight apiece by Sawyers and Calloway and seven by Brown. Meadows paced PikeView with nine boards.
Mount View, now 10-3, will visit River View Friday night and return home Saturday night to entertain Mingo Central.
PikeView will stay on the road Friday night, traveling to Shady Spring.
