CLINCHCO, Va. — There’s a decades-long list of big game-winning shots at the old Clinchco Elementary School gym.
Barring another one today, Hunter Sutherland may have knocked down the last one.
Sutherland’s 3 with 11 seconds remaining lifted Haysi to a dramatic 58-55 win over Council in the Black Diamond District semifinals Friday night.
The victory sends the Tigers into today’s finals against the Honaker Tigers, a 61-38 winner over Hurley in Friday’s nightcap.
Sutherland’s shot from the left wing wasn’t exactly a buzzer-beater, but in an historic gymnasium that will reportedly be demolished soon it was close enough.
It was the first 3 of the game for Sutherland, who doubled his point total to 6 with the shot. Council, which missed a 3 at the buzzer, had held the freshman sharpshooter, who averages around 15 points per game, in check until the game-winner.
Sutherland’s shot was set up by dribble penetration from Peyton O’Quinn, who got his sixth assist on the play.
“I wanted Peyton to go all the way in,” Haysi coach David Robinette said. “But Council defended it well. Hunter shoots the ball really well and Peyton found him.”
Tyler Tipton hit two key 3-pointers for Haysi (16-6) in a wild fourth quarter in which the lead changed hands five times and the score was tied on four occasions.
Tipton finished with a game-high 27 points, while O’Quinn added 11 points. Sutherland missed his first four attempts from the floor, but his confidence never wavered.
“I wasn’t shooting well tonight, but I thought if the ball did come to me I could make the shot,” Sutherland said. “As soon as I released it I knew it was good.”
The finish overshadowed a great effort by the 8-14 Cobras, particularly by guards Josh Viers and Lucas Barton. Viers had a double-double of 17 points and 10 steals, while Barton contributed 14 points and six assists.
“The last four or five games we’ve played as hard and tough as we can play,” said Council coach Patrick Wade, whose club has been involved in 18 games decided by six points or less. “But when it comes down to the end of games we haven’t gotten many breaks this season.
“A play here or there, a call here or there, but tonight we missed too many free throws. That really hurt us.”
Council missed six of nine free throws in one stretch in the fourth period. Not counting the combined 10-of-11 effort by Viers and Barton, the Cobras were 4-of-19 from the line overall.
Barton gave Council a 55-54 lead with two free throws with 1:25 remaining. O’Quinn tied it at 55 with a free throw at the 1:06 mark. The Cobras turned the ball over to set the stage for the game-winner.
Haysi earned a third game with Honaker in 12 days the hard way.
“I don’t care what level it is you tell kids to try and beat a good team three times, but it’s difficult,” Robinette said. “I thought Council played extremely well. They had a good game plan.
“We’ve had games where we deserved to win and didn’t. Tonight we didn’t deserve it, but we played hard and executed well in the last two minutes.”
