CLINCHCO, Va. — The Golden Wave added a tournament championship trophy to their regular season hardware with a hard fought 62-60 win in Black Diamond District tournament action at Clinchco Elementary School.
Grundy led by as many as nine in the first quarter. Honaker cut it to five at the end of the quarter. The Wave tried to hold off the Tigers. Loni Webb dropped in a layup to put Grundy up 2620 with 4:14 to play in the first half. But they were held scoreless the rest of the half.
Freshman Madison Miller keyed a 13-0 Honaker run as they took a 33-26 lead at halftime.
“This was extremely big win,” said Grundy junior Morgan Hall. “It was tough, when Honaker came back and got a lead.”
It was back and forth throughout the second half. Grundy was able to pull within one-point in the third quarter. But Laken Robinette scored a couple of times inside to put the lead back at five points going to the fourth quarter.
Hall scored with a putback and was fouled making the free throw to put the Wave up 52-51. After the Tigers missed three shots in one possession, Krystal Cantrell made a layup for Grundy and they never relinquished the lead.
“We knew it would be a low post contest, because Honaker is so good inside,” Grundy coach Craig Plymal said. “We had to make some adjustments at halftime and our girls adapted unbelievably well.
“We kind of hang our hat on our defensive effort. We weren’t happy with that run they made in the second quarter.”
Hall finished with a double-double with a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds, including 9- of-11 from the free throw line. Whenever the Golden Wave needed a bucket, she was there to deliver. Webb added 13 points and nine rebounds.
“Hall is a complete player,” stated Plymal. “She has scored over 20 points in our last three games and does a great job on the boards.”
Grundy (19-5) will advance to Region D, Division 2 tournament next week and should be one of the top seeds. The seedings will be announced today (Sunday).
“We think we should have a good seed,” Plymal said. “We have a good record and we’ve played some good competition all up and down I81. We’ve only played nine home games, we’ve had 15 on the road.”
Musick led Honaker with 22 points and six rebounds. Robinette contributed 11 points.
