CASTLEWOOD, Va. — Defense and the Gose family was too much for Grundy to handle Thursday.
Gate City shut down the Golden Wave attack on one end and Jordan and Morgan Dose took over on the other as Blue Devils advanced to both the Region D, Division 2 finals and the state quarterfinals with a 54-42 win over Grundy.
The Blue Devils will face Central in the finals Saturday at Virginia High.
All three Gose sisters scored in double figures to account for 42 of Gate City’s 54 points. That includes 10 from freshman Kaely Gose, who added a couple of blocks to lead a strong effort from the Blue Devils bench.
Gate City (16-10) trailed much of the first half before taking a 19-17 lead at the intermission.
“The positive thing was in the second quarter was, that was our second team,” Gate City coach Kelly Houseright said. “They came in with our first team in foul trouble and they played solid defense and we took the lead.”
After a low-scoring first half Gate City took control of the game with fierce defensive pressure in the third quarter.
The Blue Devils forced seven Grundy turnovers in the third period and got 10 points in the period from Jordan Gose to build a 32-23 lead. Gate City scored the first two buckets of the fourth quarter off turnovers and the Golden Wave got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
“It was a total team effort,” Houseright said. “They all came out in the second half and got our intensity level where we needed it to be and got some easy buckets out of it, which is what we wanted.”
Morgan Gose battled foul trouble through the first three quarters and scored all of her 12 points in the fourth period. Jordan Gose finished with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Grundy (20-6) got 15 points and 12 boards from Morgan Hall, but had trouble running its offense.
The Golden Wave could not get the ball inside with any regularity against the Blue Devils aggressive man defense and could not free its perimeter shooters up, either. Grundy’s only 3 of the night came in the final minute from freshman Autumn Sperry.
“We knew that we they were going to push us out, all the way to half-court,” Grundy coach Craig Plymal said. “We thought we were prepared for it.
“We practiced it and practiced it but they jump-switch so well, they’re so well-coached defensively.
“Hats off to Gate City they got to the state championship game last year for a reason.”
Senior guards Loni Webb (7 points), Krystal Cantrell (6) and Savannah Charles (2) combined for just 15 points in the final game of their careers, less than half their combined average.
