LEBANON, Va. — Freshman Kayla Mullins proved impossible to stop, as she score nine points in the fourth quarter to boost the Greenwave to a 47-37 victory over Twin Valley to advance to the finals. Mullins logged a double-double with a game-high 20 points, 13 rebounds and also grabbed four steals for good measure.
The Panthers had a huge third quarter overcoming a 20-15 halftime defecit to go up 31-27 going to the final stanza. But Clintwood (16-9) took over in the fourth quarter outscoring Twin Valley 20-6.
“When we fall behind, none of these girls get down,” remarked Mullins. “We’re always ready to go. We never hold our heads down, we keep playing, we keep working hard and it pays off in the end.”
The Greenwave kept the Panthers from scoring for almost three minutes the start of the fourth and only allowed one field goal the final eight minutes.
“I attribute that to our young kids who did good job of closing off the perimeter for Twin Valley,” said Clintwood coach Donnie Frazier. “When they did drive Katlyn Phillips did a great job of taking charges.
“If you relax on defense, Twin Valley will hit a couple 3’s and we did that in the third quarter. But we refocused and took care of the ball down the stretch.”
Katelyn Jackson finished with 11 points to lead Twin Valley (11-13).
“Number 14 (Kayla Mullins) just killed us, that’s all there was to it, plan and simple,” Twin Valley coach Rick Goodman said. “She just wanted it more than my girls. We have a lot of growing up to do.”
