LINDSIDE — Accurate shooting in the first quarter, especially from three point range, helped the James Monroe Mavericks stampede to a 20-8 advantage after the inaugural eight minutes en route to a 73-53 Class AA Region III Section 2 opening round win over the River View Raiders yesterday afternoon.
The victory moves the Mavs, now 7-14, into Tuesday evening’s semi-final round against Bluefield at Princeton High School at 6:00. Mount View and PikeView will square off in the nightcap.
Junior Jacob McKlarney, who took game scoring honors with 18 points, had eleven of those in the opening frame, including a trio of treys.
In fact, the Mavericks were a perfect 4-for-4 from three point range in the initial eight minutes.
Senior center Josh Ganoe made the back end of a two shot foul trip to give James Monroe an early 1-0 lead before Raider senior Dakota Collins answered from close range to stake River View its only lead of the afternoon at 2-1.
McKlarney started the stampede with eight unanswered points, hitting a deuce on the fast break before following with a trifecta from the right side and then another three ball from the left, all within 1:22.
After Zach Morgan broke the JM scoring run with a bucket after a steal, McKlarney continued his streak with yet another three for a 15-6 advantage that went to 20-8 after one.
Both coaches spoke of that first quarter as a deciding factor in the outcome.
Related Mav second year head coach Johnathan McPherson, “I thought we shot the ball pretty well, especially there in the first quarter.”
James Monroe converted 7-of-13 first quarter shots and cooled off just a bit to finish at 48 percent for the game.
Assessed Raider head coach Don Smith, “Their (Mavericks) shooting was awesome today.”
Ganoe, who grabbed 13 rebounds in the contest, scored four in the second, as the hosts maintained that 12 point spread at the break.
Only twice during that period did River View get the deficit to below twin digits. Freshman Tyree Baker’s jumper from the top of the key with 3:30 showing cut the margin to 25-16 and exactly three minutes later Morgan got credit for a basket on a goal tending call to show a 29-20 JM lead.
The Raiders, behind Morgan’s eight points, mounted another assault in the third, closing to 42-32 with 3:42 on the clock.
However, a timeout by McPherson was followed by five consecutive Maverick buckets to quickly move the advantage back to 20 points. Four of the five goals were recorded by James Monroe reserves, as Chord Settles started the run and added the fourth bucket and E. T. Weiss chalked up two scores. Starter Garrett Mann had the other.
Exclaimed Coach Smith, “What really killed us is we had it down to 10 and we made bad decisions and they scored ten straight points, all on layups.”
Weiss, a senior, paced James Monroe in the third with six points, while senior Micah Deskins added five.
Thirteen points, on two fourth quarter occasions, is as close as the View could get the remainder of the game, as JM again went to the long ball, connecting on 3-of-4 three point shots in the closing eight minutes to seal the win.
Continued Coach Smith, “Overall, I thought we played as hard as we could…They (Mavericks) just took the ball out farther than we were out (on the RV zone) and made the open shots.”
The Raiders were led by Morgan’s 16 points and 11 from Baker.
Taylor DeHaven and Cameron Roberts finished with nine each for the 3-20 River View contingent.
Deskins and Weiss contributed eleven apiece behind McKlarney’s 18.
The Maverick bench outscored the River View subs 30-12.
Of McKlarney, Coach McPherson said, “He’s really been working hard in the gym on his shot. It’s obviously paid off. The last seven games, he’s averaging right around 20 points per game.”
River View concluded shooting 34 percent for the game.
