PRINCETON — Lyndsay Hatfield scored her 1,000th career point and Madison May tallied 22 to help lead the PikeView Lady Panthers to a 77-31 win over the River View Lady Raiders in the opening game of the Class AA Region 3, Section 2 tournament, Tuesday night in Princeton.
“We wanted to come out and play hard and smart and our defense really set the tone,” said PikeView head coach Karen Miller. “We hadn’t played a game since Feb. 10 and I was kind of concerned how we would play. I thought we did a good job.”
PikeView’s pressure defense and full court press presented problems for River View from the outset as the Lady Raiders were unable to attempt a shot in the game’s first two-and-a-half minutes. PV jumped to a 7-2 and led 12-7 after the first period.
The Lady Panthers amped it up in the second, outscoring the Lady Raiders 22-7 to take a 34-14 lead into the locker room.
PikeView pressure continued and the lead grew in the third and the Panthers carried a 56-24 lead into the final eight minutes. With 6:51 to play in the game Hatfield scored on a layup. Panthers’ coach Karen Miller called time and Hatfield was presented a ball for reaching the milestone of 1,000 career points.
Reserves finished the game as PikeView’s lead grew as high as 48 points.
In addition to May’s 22, Hatfield scored 17 and Katelyn Shrewsbury came off the bench to contribute 10.
River View was led by Katie Dobbs with 11.
Lady Raiders head coach Gehrig Justice said, “We knew PikeView was going to be fast and athletic. We thought we could play a half court game with them and at times we did, but their pressure gave them runs of six or eight points and the next thing you know you’re down 20 and it spirals out of control.”
