Guards Tayten Sykes (21 points, four steals, four assists) and Tanner Wagner (14 points, six assists, four steals) both had big nights as the Twin Valley boys withstood a barrage of early 3-pointers from the Golden Wave in Friday’s nightcap.
Sykes made a series of key plays in the second period as the Panthers (5-5) overcame an early deficit. Wagner did the same late in the third and early in the fourth, when Twin Valley got its first double-digit lead.
“Grundy came out real hot and hit a bunch of threes,” Twin Valley coach Matthew Baldwin said. “They played with a little more aggression than they did the first time we played them.
“I could see a difference in the way they came out. But we responded pretty well. We kept trying to push the tempo and that’s the game we wanted to play.”
Cole Payne (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Austin Shortridge (11 points, 11 boards) played well inside for the Panthers.
Grundy opened the game on a 12-5 run on the strength of four treys and led early in the second quarter. The Wave trailed just 33-26 at halftime and got within 38-36 on Dylan Wolford’s third trey of the game midway through the third quarter.
The Panthers went on a 9-2 run to build a 53-42 advantage in the opening minute of the final period.
Christian Jackson scored 19 points, Ethan Duty added 14 and Wolford finished with 11 points for the Golden Wave.
