WELCH — Mount View put together a solid first half Tuesday night at the Castle to take a commanding 43-16 halftime lead over the Man Hillbillies on their way to a 70-49 victory.
The Golden Knights’ trapping full-court press caused the Hillbillies 10 first half turnovers that translated into several easy View baskets.
When forced to set up on their half of the court offensively, Mount View pushed the ball inside to Maurice Brown, who took game scoring honors with 22 points, and garnered 14 of those in the initial 16 minutes.
When shots missed, the Knights controlled the boards, out-rebounding their guests 37-11 in the first half and 62-31 for the game.
Analyzed Mount View head coach Gary Brown of his team’s defense in the first two quarters, “We talked (in the dressing room) about playing with some intensity. We came out and played defense with a passion. That’s the one thing we emphasized.”
Ironically, veteran Man head coach Harvey Arms also used the word “intensity” when he spoke of the Golden Knights in the first half, “We were a little bit hurt by the intensity of their press. They were real aggressive with it. They played hard and physical.”
Paco Bonds scored the initial points on a put back for the Knights, who led the entire way, stretching a 10-3 advantage at the 3:20 mark to 18-7 at the inaugural period’s close.
The advantage swelled to the aforementioned 43-16 at the break.
Coach Brown called off the full court press in the second half, resulting in less pressure, which the Hillbillies found to their liking.
Brown led a quartet of double figures Mount View scorers with 22 points, followed by Antoine Calloway’s 18. Tashaan Vineyard and Bonds followed with 10 points apiece.
Brown also pulled down 19 rebounds, while Bonds grabbed 10 misfires for the 2-2 Knights.
John Keffer and Clay Brumfield scored 14 and 11 points respectively for the 1-2 Hillbillies.
Continued Coach Brown, “I thought we played pretty well offensively. We still have some work to do, but we’re coming.”
The Golden Knights will face Valley Fayette, Friday at 6 p.m. in the Sissonville Tournament, with the host Indians meeting Wayne in the nightcap. Saturday the Friday night losing teams will play at six and the championship contest will follow.
Man returns home to entertain Fayetteville, Saturday night.
