MONTCALM — It was a Golden Knight for Mount View, even without several of its reinforcements.
Teddy Hazzard scored 23 points and Paco Bonds added 17 points and 17 rebounds, as Mount View used a strong one-two punch to overcome suspensions and injuries and beat Montcalm 63-29 on Wednesday night at Montcalm High School.
Mount View (4-1), which had six players out — five for disciplinary reasons and one with injury — jumped on the Generals early, using an aggressive man-to-man defense to force eight first quarter turnovers to build an 18-4 lead after the opening eight minutes.
The lead grew to 23 (35-13) at the break, and the Golden Knights eventually built its margin to as much as 34.
“We just told the guys to go out there and try to play together and play hard and we will try to work through this and for the most part they did a pretty decent job,” Mount View head coach Gary Brown said. “We had some lapses on different things we try to teach, but for the most part I was pretty pleased.”
Montcalm (2-4) was saddled with 13 turnovers at halftime and 26 for the game. Darius Brodessor had 16 points for first-year head coach Matt Smith.
“We didn’t handle their pressure well, we knew they were going to come out and pressure us, and our kids let it get to them,” said Smith, who had previously been an assistant at Princeton. “They tried to play to their speed, they did what they wanted to, they came out and played aggressive man-to-man and we played into that.”
Mount View, which finished third in a tournament last week in Chapmanville, will play tonight in the Alpha Natural Resources Holiday Tournament against Patrick Henry-Roanoke at Princeton Senior High School.
“Nine-0. Best in the Roanoke Valley is saying something, they usually have pretty good basketball in the Roanoke Valley,” Brown said. “I am not looking for an easy task.
“We have already told our guys we are going to have to try and do something to try and offset their quickness and speed and they are probably going to be pretty athletic. We are going to try and find a way to play with them.”
Mount View had no such troubles with Montcalm, building a double-digit lead it would never lose at 12-2 with 3:38 on the clock. Hazzard canned two of his five 3s, while Bonds added four points and Antoine Calloway made a basket of his own.
Montcalm, which entered having won two straight games, hadn’t played since Dec. 18.
“It is hard to jump in against somebody like Mount View when you have had off two weeks because no matter what you do in practice it is hard to simulate that speed,” Smith said. “We don’t see it in practice, so that hurt us and then we got down and we weren’t making shots.
“You could see it in our face, all the energy just left us.”
Mount View finished the opening half making 15-of-28 shots, including 10 second quarter points by the 6-foot-2, 240-pound Bonds. He banked in a 3 at the buzzer for the 35-12 lead.
Brown acknowledged by Bonds and Maurice Brown, who was one of five players suspended, could be a talented duo for the Knights.
“When they are playing well together we have a good tandem,” Brown said. “Maurice kind of let us down tonight and Paco picked up the slack so I was glad to see that,”
While Bonds did most of his damage inside, Hazzard was 5-of-8 from 3-point range.
“With that inside-outside punch, they hit us for 40,” Smith said. “That is tough to defend because they work it well. They get it inside to (Bonds) and if they collapse, he takes it to the rim like he should and then he would kick out and they have their feet set.
“They were very well prepared, he uses those two very well.”
Mount View also received nine points each from Calloway and Tashaan Vineyard. Calloway also had seven rebounds and nine assists, but Brown would like to see the senior guard be more aggressive in looking for shots.
“I talked to him about it after the game and he really needs to get himself going offensively and shooting the basketball,” Brown said. “We really don’t have what we call good scorers outside, he has to play well outside.
“Teddy shot the ball relatively well tonight and he hasn’t been so that was a plus, but we still need to get him going.”
Mount View continued to add to the lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Generals 9-1 before Brodessor finally scored with 2:01 on the clock. Brodessor scored 10 of his points in the second half.
Montcalm also received five points and five boards from Jacob Lambert
Smith does think Montcalm, which will host Meadow Bridge on Friday, will continue to improve as the season progresses, and will be helped by the return from injury of Matt Pennington.
“We have seen growth, especially since the first game, we are doing more things correctly,” Smith said. “Tonight we ran into that man-to-man and it hurt us, but that is a solid AA school that we played.
“I think if the kids continue to work and we continue to get better we are going to win our share of games. I haven’t given up on us surprising some people and hopefully they haven’t given up on that either.”
Mount View will visit Princeton tonight, having accepted an invitation to replace Webster County in a tournament that was slated to be played prior to Christmas.
“It is kind of difficult playing three back-to-back games,” said Brown, whose Knights had a pre-holiday tourney snowed out at Sissonville, “but you have to do that in the state tournament so we decided we would go ahead and take it.”
Mount View will play Patrick Henry-Roanoke today at 5:30 p.m., followed by Princeton and James Monroe at 7:30. The consolation and championship games are slated for Friday.
