Lady Knights sweep past Patriots

WELCH — The Mount View Lady Golden Knights used their quickness on defense, coupled with offensive rebounding superiority in the opening half last evening, to take a 16-3 first quarter advantage that ended with a 49-23 victory over the visiting Independence Lady Patriots at the Castle.
The victory by the View girls, their fifth in seven games, snapped a three game win streak by Independence. The Lady Pats go to 5-6 with the setback, marking the second time this season they have fallen to Mount View.
Emily Fedukovich provided the visitors with a short-lived 10 lead with 6:40 showing in the inaugural period before the Lady Knights ran off ten straight points and 16 of the next 18 for the 16-3 dominance after one frame.
Ashleigh Belfiore got the View on the board at the 4:38 mark with a fast break goal. Gezelle Brown followed with a putback and added another offensive rebound bucket. Belfiore did a repeat of her opening points on the break and Jordan Younger added a stickback in the early going.
Belfiore, who led the Lady Knights with 10 points, had four in the initial eight minutes, with Brown canning six of her eight in than same span.
Despite threes by Brittany Wrenn and Jessica Lilly in the second for Indy, the View outscored their guests for a 3011 advantage at the break.
Shamecca Perkins and Belfiore added four points apiece in the second quarter for Mount View. .
Analyzed Knight head coach Yvonne Brown, "I thought in the first half we ran our offense a lot better and got the ball to the open girl...Also, we handled the ball a little better tonight, not turning the ball over and over and over."
The Lady Knights added to their lead by one in a low scoring third before outscoring Independence 13-7 in the final frame.
Nine of the eleven View players got into the scoring act, with Younger and Tamia Joyce joining Brown with 8 each, behind Belfiore's 10. Perkins finished with six.
Senior Kelsey Hart paced the Lady Pats with 10 points.
Continued Coach Brown, "I thought that all of the girls played good team ball."
The Lady Knights will play at Van tonight in the first game of a girls-boys doubleheader in that Boone County community.
Independence will be idle until next Wednesday when the Lady Pats travel to James Monroe.
