GARDNER — The first meeting this basketball season between the Mount View Golden Knights and the PikeView Panthers, in the opener of the Chapmanville Holiday Tournament went down to the wire with the Panthers pulling out a nail-biter 50-49 one month ago last night.
Monday evening’s second meeting was no less exciting, with the Golden Knights avenging that earlier setback with a 64-60 decision in overtime.
The latter contest featured seven lead changes and a like number of ties, with the final deadlock at 55 at the end of regulation.
In the extra four-minute period, Jason Weitzel pushed the Panthers on top 58-55 1:03 from the tip to start the bonus frame.
Mount View battled back, scoring seven unanswered points, with a pair of buckets coming after steals.
Ishmael Sawyers, playing only his second contest of the season, started the spurt with a driving goal, followed by a Maurice Brown steal and bucket.
Brown scored again before Tashaan Vineyard canned one of two foul shots with 15 seconds remaining for a 62-58 advantage.
Weitzel knocked down a pair of charity tosses some six seconds later, cutting the deficit to 62-60.
Sawyers answered with two foul tries less than two ticks later to put the contest out ou reach.
Related Mount View head coach Gary Brown, “I was proud of our guys for hanging in there. We weren’t playing too well, but we hung in there and got the win.”
Brown and fellow senior Antoine Calloway paced the Golden Knight offense with 22 and 21 points respectively, while Sawyers added 11.
Weitzel’s dozen led the 4-10 Panthers, with Seth Wood and Tanner Farley chipping in 10 apiece.
Analyzed Pike View first year head coach Lindsey Jones, “We knew it was going to be a close game. We got good looks (with shots), but didn’t hit them.”
The Knights will return home to entertain Mingo Central Wednesday in the second game of a girls-boys doubleheader at the Castle. The Lady Knights will host Man in the opener.
Pike View plays at Independence Wednesday night.
