PRINCETON — Travon Reese hit a layup and a pair of foul shots in the final 20 seconds to help South Charleston hold off a Princeton rally and beat the Tigers 62-58 Friday night.
Princeton had come from eight points behind midway through the final period to tie the game with 20 seconds left on a Darnell Palmer 3 at 58-58.
South Charleston cracked Princeton’s press and Reese hit a layup with 17 seconds left. After the Tigers missed a pair of contested layups, Reese was fouled and made both foul shots with seven seconds remaining to secure the win for the highly-ranked Black Eagles, now 11-2.
Princeton trailed at the end of period one, 28-15, but kept the deficit to a single point and went to the locker room down 31-30 at the half.
After starting slowly in the third quarter Princeton climbed back in it in the fourth when Kyle Caron hit the short corner jumper and backed it up with the 3.
Ott Elmore answered with five unanswered points and South Charleston led 58-53. Caron responded with baseline jumper and the Tigers trailed 58-55 with 38 seconds remaining. That set the stage for the frantic finish.
Caron led all Princeton scorers with 18 points, while Ryan Meadows had 11 and Austin Southcott added 10. Ott Elmore paced South Charleston with 21. Reece added 16 and Neal Brown canned 15.
Princeton, 8-5, returns to action next Friday, entertaining Bluefield.
