BRADSHAW — To say River View played well in the first quarter of last night's boys' basketball game against Mount View would be a gross understatement.
The host Raiders connected on 7-of-14 shots from the floor, while limiting Mount View to but 3-of-16 shooting. River View outrebounded the Golden Knights 12-9 during to the inaugural eight minutes. Add to that, four turnovers by the visitors.
Those three facets of the game helped the Raiders to a 16-7 lead heading into the second quarter.
As a fighting force will often do, Mount View regrouped for the final three frames, with a charge that could be well called "The charge of the Knight brigade.
During that assault, the Golden Knights outscored River View 52-18, while outrebounding their guests 37-18 and recording a 59-34 victory.
Taylor DeHaven came off the River View bench to score five first period points to lead his club, while Maurice Brown scored a like number for Mount View.
The charge started almost immediately into the second, with the Golden Knights scoring the initial 15 points and outscoring their hosts 21-4 to take a 28-20 lead at intermission.
Jerry Saunders scored seven and Brown six in the deciding second frame. It was a Brown score from close range with 4:49 left in the half that gave Mount View the lead for keeps at 17-16.
Fireworks erupted with 1:58 remaining in the second, and the Knights leading 27-18. River View head coach Don Smith was whistled for a pair of technical fouls and ejected from the game.
Mount View added to the advantage in the third, outgunning the Raiders 18-7 for a 46-27 lead heading into the final battle.
Analyzed Golden Knight head coach Gary Brown of his inspirational words that led to the turnaround, "We talked about the level of commitment to playing hard, and the intensity...We weren't moving our feet."
Brown took game scoring honors with 19, while grabbing 11 rebounds. Donnell Bonds kicked in 11 points and 8 rebounds for Mount View.
Freshman Tyree Baker was the lone twin digit scorer for the Raiders, finishing with ten points.
Coach Smith related of a shift in momentum, "In the second quarter, they (Golden Knights) were sending all five of their guys to the boards."
That aggressiveness by Mount View led to a 10-4 rebound advantage in the second.
Mount View, now 11-3, will return home tonight to host Mingo Central.
River View drops to 2-15 and will also play tonight at home, entertaining James Monroe, with the Lady Raiders also playing the Lady Mustangs in the preliminary contest.
