BRADSHAW — The James Monroe Lady Mavericks used a decided rebounding edge and graciously received the help of 32 River View turnovers Saturday afternoon to win their fourth consecutive girls basketball game, taking a 63-53 victory over the Lady Raiders.

Senior Laine Shiflet and junior Bailee Jackson scored 16 and 11 points respectively to pace the now 4-5 Lady Mavericks in the first game of a girls-boys twinbill at River View. Just as importantly to the overall offensive output, all 11 of the James Monroe players scored.

“That’s something we’ve been doing the last four or five games,” remarked first year Lady Mavs coach Mike Hines, addressing the balanced scoring. “Nobody cares who scores, they just want to win, and that’s what I’m after,” he continued.

Sophomore Katie Dobbs led the 6-3 Lady Raiders with 16 points and 20 rebounds, while senior captain Kiersten Dority had 14 points before leaving the contest with 7:42 remaining in the fourth with a possible broken nose. Sophomore Paige Cooper followed with 13 points, including 11 in the final stanza.

Each half mimicked the other, with James Monroe controling the first and third, outscoring its hosts 17-10 and 19-8 respectively, while the Lady Raiders took the second 15-13 and the fourth 20-14.

View turnovers that led to transition opportunities helped the Lady Mavericks to a 15-4 advantage at the 2:38 mark of the first before Dobbs started a six point spurt with a jumper from the front. A technical foul on the Lady Mavs for a wrong jersey number in the scorebook led to a pair of Dority charity tosses and freshman Kiersten Roberts finished the run with two additional free throws.

Jackson had five and Shiflet four in that initial 15-4 burst to start the game.

Although the Lady Raiders tied the score twice, at 23 and 25 in the second frame, they were not able to get over the hump to take the lead. Dority scored six and Dobbs five in the second for the Lady View, while Cassie Weikle accounted for five of her nine points in that eight minute span for James Monroe. A 15-2 run by the ladies from Monroe County opened the third, extending what had been a 30-25 intermission lead to 45-27 midway through the chapter.

In the fourth the Lady Raiders closed to within 10 several times, but could get no closer. James Monroe will next be in acton on Jan. 7, entertaining Greenbrier West.

River View head coach Gehrig Justice singled out the turnovers as the leading culprit in the defeat, “I think we started to gain with three straight turnovers. The last four games we’ve done that... One mistake has led to a four point swing... the girls just have to realize that one bad play isn’t the end of the world.”

The Lady View will play at Mount View on Jan. 6.
