PILGRIM’S KNOB, Va. — They’re known as “supers”: four-game sets with two junior varsity and two varsity games, which made Friday a super sweep for Twin Valley.
Four Panthers scored in double figures to lead the boys to a 61-47 Crooked Road Conference win over Haysi in the final varsity contest at Twin Valley High School.
In the girls varsity game Alexis Vance and Katelyn Jackson combined for 47 points to lead Twin Valley to a convincing, 74-45 CRC triumph over the Lady Tigers.
The TV boys took their first lead at 4-2 and answered every Haysi run the rest of the way with balanced scoring a solid defensive effort, especially on the perimeter.
Brandon McGlothlin (15 points), Tayten Sykes (14), Tanner Wagner (12) and Austin Shortridge (12) all scored in double digits for the Panthers, who improved to 4-1 in the CRC and 8-6 overall.
Hunter Sutherland, who averages over 20 points per game, scored 10 of his 14 points in the first quarter to lead Haysi. The Tigers (7-5, 3-2) struggled from the perimeter and struggled all over the court in the fourth period, when they hit just 3-of-16 shots (18.8 percent) from the field.
“I told the guys at halftime Sutherland’s a good player and they have some other guys who can score and they’re going to come out and make a run,” said Twin Valley coach Matthew Baldwin, whose club held slim 5-point leads at the end of each of the first two quarters and a narrow 46-40 advantage after three periods.
“I thought Brandon did an excellent job, Brandon and Tanner both guarding Sutherland. He was the conference player of the year last year and we held him to two points in the second half. I was really proud of our defense.”
Guage Hill (10 points) and Will Ratliff (10) scored 14 of their combined 20 points for the Tigers in the second half, but it was never enough to close the gap.
“Give Twin Valley credit, they’re scrappy and they have a good ballclub,” Haysi coach Dave Robinette said. “We always have trouble running our offense here. Coach Baldwin is doing a good job with them.”
Wagner, McGlothlin and Sykes eachhad three steals for the Panthers, who forced seven of Haysi’s 15 turnovers in the fourth period. Twin Valley finished the game on a 13-4 run.
“We came out and played with a lot of intensity,” Baldwin added. “I told the guys if we put a four-quarter game together we can be a pretty good team. I think it was the first time all year we’ve come out and played hard all four quarters.”
Hill hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds for Haysi.
