PRINCETON — Senior Night at Princeton saw the Tigerettes host the Shady Spring Tigers. Senior point guard Taylor Hamm scored 23 points, including five 3s to lead her team to an 81-55 win.
Shady scored the game’s first points, but it would be a long time before they added more. Princeton led 6-2 midway through the first period before turning on the afterburners and outscored Shady 18-2 the final four-plus minutes to lead 24-4 after one.
Key for Princeton was 6 for 7 free throw shooting by Kaleigh Barker, and a pair of 3s by Hamm and Danielle Hall.
Princeton continued rolling in the second and carried a 50-11 lead into the intermission.
Shady had its most productive offensive quarter in the third, scoring 14 points, including 3s by Morgan Hylton and Brooklyn Meador, but Hamm connected for 10 points in the quarter, including a pair from long range to lead 70-25 after three.
Hamm hit her final 3 in the fourth frame and was taken from the game to an ovation from the home crowd. The Tigerettes other senior, Anna Saunders, started the game and after the opening tip left to an ovation.
Saunders has been injured this season and has seen very limited action.
Head coach Charlie Angell talked about the team’s seniors.
“I feel bad for Anna because she has wanted to play so bad. She has come to practice every day, been right there,” Angell said. “As soon as the doctor told her she could, she started practicing. We were going to play her some JV to see if her foot would hold up... she got four points at Riverside in the varsity game.
“Taylor is such a remarkable person, athlete. I can’t say enough about her. All these years I’ve coached, she is one of the most remarkable kids that I’ve ever been around as far as playing as hard as she can, all the time.”
In addition to Hamm’s 23, Hall dropped in 21 and Barker added 15 for Princeton. Hylton led Shady Spring with 11.
The Tigerettes have won four-of their last five games and despite a tough stretch in the middle of the season where they went against a slew of Top 10 Class AAA teams, Angell believes the team is doing well.
He talked about what he told the team after facing and falling to those squads.
“I told them to keep the faith, just keep doing what we’re doing and as the season progresses, we’re going to start picking up wins and that’s what we’re doing,” Angell said. “Right now we’re undefeated in sectional play. I think we should get a No. 2 seed in the section.”
Princeton plays next on Tuesday at Parkersburg. Shady visits Riverside on the same night.
