In Monday’s varsity opener Grundy never led in a game in which it missed 18 of its first 19 shots from the floor to go with an 8-of-20 effort at the free throw line in the first half.
Lexi Boyd scored 17 points and Emily Lane tossed in 14 as the Lady Wave fought back from a 10-point deficit to tie the score at 31-31 on a 3 by Lane at the end of the third period.
Kristian Wilson answered with two 3-pointers in the opening minutes of the fourth period and Grundy (7-5) went cold from the field again.
Wilson finished with four treys and a game-high 19 points. Taylor Owens added 13 points.
“We did not defend the three-point shot very well,” Grundy coach Craig Plymal said. “We battled back. I’m proud of the girls for that. But our free throw shooting eventually cost us the game.”
Wilson scored nine points in the final period. Wilson, Owens and Amaya Lee all hit free throws in the fourth quarter to protect the Bearcats advantage.
Boyd scored all 10 of Grundy’s fourth period points.
