OAK HILL — Bluefield overcame an effective Oak Hill 2-3 zone to grind out a 52-38 win on Tuesday night.
After trailing early 4-0, the Beavers launched a 16-3 run, during which Donta Hopkins and Jeremy Thompson scored 12 points.
The Beavers expanded their lead to double figures at 21-11 early in the second quarter on a Mookie Collier scoop shot. Oak Hill then held Bluefield scoreless for five minutes and strung together nine unanswered points.
A Collier elbow jump shot at the halftime buzzer gave the Beavers a 23-19 lead at the break.
Oak Hill rallied to within a point, 27-26, on a T.J. Wynn foul shot. After a timeout Bluefield tore off 12 unanswered points. Thompson hit back to back 3s, Hopkins converted a pair of foul shots and then scored off a steal and Thompson hit a layup in transition.
Bluefield led 39-26 with 1:22 left in the third period.
In the fourth quarter Bluefield’s lead grew to 15, 47-32, and they won the game by 14.
Hopkins paced all scorers with 17 points.
He was joined in double figures by Thompson and Collier, who added 13 apiece.
Wynn led Oak Hill (4-9) scorers with 11.
Bluefield (9-6) returns to action Friday, entertaining Mount View at the Brushfork Armory.
