GARDNER — The PikeView Panthers opened the regular season with a surprisingly lopsided victory over the Wyoming East Warriors 73-44.
The Panthers looked to be in midseason form as they jumped out to a 17-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. PikeView used pressure defense to force multiple turnovers in the first half to gain the big lead.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game coming in. Wyoming East is always really well-coached and always has a talented group,” said PikeView head coach Colton Thompson. “We knew coming in that they had a younger group of kids and we tried to take advantage of that.”
In the second quarter Wyoming East scored two points in the first minute but the Panthers went on a 14-0 run to put the game out of reach. When the two teams reached intermission PikeView enjoyed a 39-11 lead.
The two teams played a more tightly contested second half as PikeView outscored Wyoming East 34-33.
PikeView had five players in double digits and was led in scoring by Jason Weitzel with 15 points, seven assists, five steals, and five rebounds. Tyler Ruble added 13 points and eight rebounds. Seth Wood had 13 points, Takota Bailey 12 and Seth Meadows 11.
The Warriors were led by Jonathan Sims with 15. Cody Lester and David Carte both added nine.
PikeView will not play again until Dec. 18 when they take part in a Christmas tournament at Narrows High School. Wyoming East will host Scott on Friday.
