COUNCIL, Va. — Neither team shot well, but Grundy more than made up for it on the boards.
The Golden Wave won the rebounding battle and topped Buchanan County rival Council, 53-39 in BDD play Tuesday at Council Elementary School.
Charles McCy posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, including seven offensive boards for Grundy, which held a 45-26 rebounding edge.
Some 18 of Grundy's boards came on the offensive glass.
The Golden Wave (2-1) had 10 offensive rebounds in building a 23-14 halftime lead in a sometimes sloppy game.
"It was sloppy," said Grundy coach Brian Moore. "We did some things well, taking care of the ball a little bit better, doing a little bit better job on defense and getting a few more people involved than we did in our first two games.
"We stressed the boards more than anything. The last week or so we've been playing good on the boards. We missed a lot of stickbacks, but at least they were in there fighting for rebounds."
Christian Jackson also finished with a double-double for the Golden Wave with 10 rebounds and 10 points. Jordan McCoy added 16 points and combined with his brother for 11 steals, five by Jordan.
Grundy forced the Cobras (1-3) into 22 turnovers, a very high number in a low-scoring game.
"It was just poor execution on our part," Council coach Patrick Wade said. "We weren't able to keep them ff the boards.
"Give them credit. Grundy has improved defensively and we turned the ball over too many times and we didn't hit enough shots to stay competitive."
Luke Barton scored 12 points and Ty Mackey added nine for Council.
The Cobras host Twin Springs tonight. Grundy hosts River View on Thursday.
