BRADSHAW — River View played host to the Dr. Martin Luther King Showcase Monday and both the boys’ and girls’ teams came away with wins in the four-high-school-game event.
In the second game of the day, following the Montcalm Lady Generals’ victory over Mountain Mission in the opener, the Raiders burst on top of Lincoln County 25-7 after one quarter and 46-16 at the break.
In the final high school contest of the evening, junior Katie Dobbs scored a three point play on an out-of-bounds play with 27 seconds remaining to break a 43-all tie with James Monroe to put the Lady Raiders on top for keeps in a 48-43 win.
In a contest that was tied five times and featured four lead changes, the Lady Mavs gave the View fits in the opening half with a packed in zone.
Sophomore Kiersten Roberts scored the initial 10 points of the game for River View, as the Lady Raiders led up until the 4:15 mark of the second, when Lady Maverick freshman Gracie Mann sank a pair of free throws to produce the first tie at 16 and then canned two more charity tosses to put her team in the lead.
Mann topped the visitors in scoring with 18, while point guard Chylyn Fox pitched in 13 for the 4-10 Lady Mavs.
Fox’s trifecta with 2:53 left in the third gave JM its biggest lead of the evening, at 32-25 before the Dobbs-Roberts duo combined to score 21 of the final 23 Lady Raider points in the win. Dobbs canned 13 and Roberts 8 of those 21, with junior Paige Cooper adding the other two.
The fourth showed deadlocks at 34, 36, 41 and lastly 43 before Dobbs converted the aforementioned three point play and then added a put back with 6 ticks left to seal the win.
Dobbs took game scoring honors with 22, followed by Roberts’ 18.
Related Lady Mav head coach Michael Hines of his team’s zone defense, “Coach Justice made a good adjustment taking the ball inside with Katie. We knew we didn’t have anybody who could guard her if they did get the ball in the low post. They made the right adjustment.”
Countered Coach Gehrig Justice of the View, “James Monroe is a good team. He only had six girls. If you look at who they’ve lost to, they’ve lost to PikeView, Bluefield and other strong teams. ...
“I thought Kiersten Roberts played real well for us tonight. And Katie Dobbs getting the rebound and the put back. It’s games like this that you turn to your leaders, and they stepped up tonight.”
River View, now 10-4, will play host to Van next week in the opener of a girls’-boys’ doubleheader.
The Lady Mavs will entertain Bluefield Thursday evening.
In the other high school game of the Showcase, the Man boys defeated James Monroe 56-46.
